Star Wars Black Series 6 Inch Darth Maul Figure Review
I bought this figure pretty much because I needed him to complete the line, but it turns out that he's one of my favorite figures from wave 1! He has fantastic articulation for a mass retail figure and 2 different looks that you can change him to and from with ease.

CLICK HEREWhen the Star Wars Black Series figure were first announced, I must admit that I was the least bit excited to get my hands on Darth Maul. I’m just not really a fan of the character that much, and he’s hardly in the movie! The promotional pictures that Hasbro released were also less than impressive. Well since I am going to be getting all of the 6 inch SWB figures, so I just had to get good old Darth Maul. I’m glad that I did because he’s way better than I expected. Let’s take a look at the Star Wars Black Series 6 Inch Darth Maul Figure in a full-blown review!
Packaging
By now you pretty much have to know what the 6 inch Star Wars Black Series packaging looks like. If you don’t it is pretty much a window box that fits the figure perfectly. There is little to no wasted room here. What I also like about these boxes is that they don’t have the annoying twisties, and that you can put the figure back in the box without damaging anything.
The front of the box features Darth Maul’s name along the bottom and a head shot of him along the top. The window is big enough for you to see the full figure to examine him in the store for any defects before purchasing him.
The back of the box features a black and white image of Darth Maul (fitting to the BLACK series) and some text that reads:
The evil sith apprentice Darth Maul engages in a fierce lightsaber duel with Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
“At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge.”
Sculpt
The Star Wars Black Series 6 Inch Darth Maul Figure features a very nice sculpt with loads of texture and detail. I am going to assume that every wrinkle and fold on his robe is accounted from on-screen, because I really don’t know enough about that kind of stuff to tell you if it is or not. There are tons of Star Wars only sites that I’m sure can tell you just how accurate the folds are on his costume.
If you take his robe off, his upper body is solid plastic and his lower body features a skirt made out of fabric and soft plastic. All of his clothing features realistic wrinkles and creases which really make this figure pop.
He has some nice smaller details sculpted on like a small hole on his belt to attach his lightsaber hilt, buckles on his boots and nice detailing on the outer robe.
Accessories
For accessories, Darth Maul comes with 2 interchangeable heads (1 with the robe glued on and 1 without), a dual ended lightsaber (which separates in 2 parts) and the binoculars from the nighttime searching scene in The Phantom Menace.
The dual head option is a genius idea and works fantastically. He can’t pose as well with the robe on, but still has decent movement. His lightsaber is made of a rubbery plastic which came to me all bent out of shape. It’s really hard to make it look straight for any photos or poses. Finally, the binoculars are really just there for him to hold in his hands, as you can’t get his arms up high enough to actually look through them.
Paint
There isn’t very much paint on this figure, but where there is it’s well done for the most part. The heads are both painted with precision with very little slop. The accessories are also nearly perfectly painted.
Articulation
Like I said above, the Star Wars Black Series 6 Inch Darth Maul Figure is a little bit restricted with his robe on, but if you take it off then you have a pretty flexible figure. I see someone has been attending daily yoga class… Mhmm… He has:
- Ball joint head
- Hinged neck
- Ball joint shoulders
- Swivel/hinge elbows
- Swivel/hinge wrists
- Ball joint torso
- Ball joint hips
- Swivel thighs
- Double joint knees
- Swivel/hinge ankles
Darth Maul is extremely poseable for a 6 inch mass retail figure. There isn’t a pose that I have wanted to get him in that I haven’t been able to get with ease. If you work at it you can even get some pretty cool one-legged kicking poses.
Overall
I bought this figure pretty much because I needed him to complete the line, but it turns out that he’s one of my favorite figures from wave 1! He has fantastic articulation for a mass retail figure and 2 different looks that you can change him to and from with ease.
The only thing that is to not like about this figure is the fact that his lightsaber is made of soft plastic. It always seems to look all bent out of shape, making him look like wuss.
