As toy companies continue to make breakthroughs in the way that action figures are produced, it seems that the retro-style 8″ figures from the 1970’s are all the rage. Many toy companies have reproduced what MEGO made popular 40 years ago, but there has always been one license missing: the Marvel Comics characters from Mego’s World’s Greatest Super-Heroes line. They were extremely popular back then, and now they demand a pretty penny on the secondary market if you can find one mint-in-box. Thankfully, Diamond Select Toys has picked up the license and now they have announced that they will reproduce (and add to) those classic Marvel figures, starting with a retro-style Amazing Spider-Man collector’s set.
Designed and sculpted for DST by the retro-craftsmen at EMCE Toys, this special edition collector’s set will include the Amazing Spider-Man as he first appeared in 1973 with his “circle suit”, packaged inside of a reproduction box. The set also includes a small booklet with the history of Spider-Man, interchangeable heads, hands, outfits, and accessories so that you can swap out the parts to create his alter ego: Peter Parker, or even the modern Spider-Man.
The set is limited to just 3,000 pieces world-wide and will retail for $80. Pre-orders should open soon, but don’t expect them to hang around too long. Future sets will put the spotlight on Iron Man, Captain America, and Wolverine, who was never included in the 1970’s line of MEGO figures.
