Playmates Toys has recently updated their website with product pages for the Mirage Comic Based Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures, which are currently hitting stores now.
I have never really been into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles though I do know that they originally got their start in the Mirage Studios TMNT Comics. It was a very gritty and edgy comic book and it was in complete Black and White. And they all wore red masks and had dark green skin originally. They changed it in the cartoon so that children can recognize them better aside them having different weapons.
These figures do look really good in my opinion. The paint job on them looks really good and I love the dark green flesh tone that they have. I’ve noticed that they have some sketch lines painted on them, which I really like. It’s very prominent on their chest, hands, thighs, and heads. Though, it appears the sketch lines are painted in the same places on all four figures. It really does give them a comic book look. The yellow is rather muted and not as bright as they appear in the cartoons etc. I really dig the brown kneepads, belt, wrist wraps and elbow pads; they have some great texture to them.
They also have slightly different head sculpts. It’s most notable looking at their mouths.
Their weapons are painted very well and look clean. Raphael’s Sai’s and Leonardo’s swords have red and silver hilts and Michelangelo’s nunchucks and Donatello’s Bo Staff are painted brown though the nunchucks have silver on them too. I should add these figures don’t seem have any sheaves or loops on their belts to store their weapons.
These figures are in the 6″ scale and the have the standard articulation for their size. Which to me appears to be a ball-jointed head, ball jointed shoulders, ball jointed elbows, and swivel wrists, ball and pin hips and ball jointed knees.
I know that NECA did some TMNT figures some years ago and are now pretty hard to get hold of. Though, there are bootlegs of them floating around for much more reasonable prices. I think that Playmates have done a very successful job in re-doing the figures that NECA released some years ago and it’s rumored that they may go back to the license in the future.
Playmates Toys says that the figures should be hitting stores around you within the month. I currently can’t find any online retailers that have them listed for pre-order, but it’s possible they will be solicit to online retailers after they hit retail stores.
