Mattel Fixes ‘Exclusivity’ Problem for SDCC 2014 Attendees

mattel sdcc 2014 exclusive MOTUC filmation hordak treasure chest impMany people attend San Diego Comic-Con each and every year for the exclusive merchandise that is offered by various manufacturers. Though, in recent years toy manufacturers have been offering ‘SDCC Exclusives’ online to non-show attendees. This year Mattel is taking a step back with their Masters of the Universe Classics SDCC 2014 exclusive and giving fans the ‘exclusivity’ that they deserve.

Attending Comic-Con can be very expensive. Every year I end up spending thousands of dollars at the show on food, travel, hotels, and of course exclusives. There is only one problem, many of those exclusives that I purchase aren’t really exclusive at all because they are put up for sale to the general public after or during the show.

A fan asked Scott Neitlich, a brand manager at Mattel, if they might reconsider including the show attendee bonus “Imp as a Treasure Chest” figure (pictured above) with the remainder of the SDCC 2014 Filmation Hordak figures that will go up for sale on after the show. Here is what Scott said:

“Unfortunately not. The treasure chest is a seperate polly bagged item and was funded by our SDCC promo budget, not the toy brand budget. Both Hordak and the Imp as Chest are already completely produced and we only have enough Chests to cover the quota of Hordak that is going to the show (both for pre sale and physcially bought at the show). There are more units of Hordak produced for sale online post show, but there are not enough Chests to include one with each.

The chest was specifically produced to help move units at the show and give SDCC attendees a reward for coming out. People spend a lot of time and money to come to the show and deserve something for that. After all, before exisiting, the ONLY way to get these figs was at the show. Now that we sell our figures online post show, we were specifically tasked to find a way to make something exclusive for the show again! Last year our Rock Warriors set was the exact same at show and online and we are tring to correct that this year by giving something special to those who physcially do to the show and spend a lot of time and money doing so.”

So for this year’s Comic-Con, show attendees and non-attendees are going to be able to get their hands on the MOTUC exclusive, but only show attendees will get the extra “Imp as a Treasure Chest” figure as a bonus for attending the show and spending all that money. A bonus that will be well deserved.

  1. Hopefully they have enough each day. This reminds me of the whole Gleek debacle. Where they didn’t have enough Gleeks in the booth each day to match the number of Wonder Twins.
