This version of the Masters of the Universe Classics King Grayskull Figure was released on November 15, 2010. This version is the re-issue version of figure that was hard to find.
Sometimes re-issued figures can be better done, but most of the time you will find that they just plain suck.
Since I just started getting MOTUC figures recently I don’t have the first version of the figure for comparison. I did, however, research him online so I will be comparing this review to the research that I have done.
I have really grown to like the MOTUC figures, even though this is just my 2nd figure. Sure there are a few things that I have noticed that I don’t like about the line, but there is always going to be something that you don’t like about a toy line.
Well, most of the time. I still haven’t found something that I don’t like about Hot Toys.
Packaging
The packaging is very similar to the other figures in the MOTUC line though there is one really cool difference. There is a bright blue bolt of lightning across the front of the bubble between the two halves of the Power Sword. It’s like the bolt was caused by the sword. It’s really cool for all you MOC collectors.
On the back of the package there are some of the other figures in the line featured and then you have the bio for the figure on the back. Hordak must feel a little bit left out being the only bad guy on the back of the package.
I really like the packaging. Despite MattyCollector’s white mailer box efforts, my card was still slightly damaged. I wonder how many figures I’m going to have to go through until I will get one that would be suitable for a MOC collector?
Sculpt
So the sculpt for this figure and the original version are identical. The differences from what I could find on the internet are that the original King Grayskull’s head was molded in flesh color and this guy’s was fully painted. This figures cape is red instead of brown. This figures harness, gauntlets, and belt and silver instead of gray.
The top of the cape also has a flocked fuzzy trim. I don’t like it one bit. As soon as I took him out of the package I was like “What the !%&# is this?” I hate when there is fuzzy stuff on my action figures. It is just not meant to be on there. Especially white. Come on. That is going to get dirty and look terrible in a matter of weeks. The original version of the figure didn’t have this and he looked way better. (part of the sculpt score)
I like the harness, gauntlets, and belt of this figure but hate the new cape.
For accessories, King Grayskull comes with the Power Sword, Orb of Power, shield, and 2 halves of the Power Sword. The orb is pretty awesome, though it would have been nice for it to come with a display stand.
The 2 halves of the sword stick together pretty good, but not really good. There is still a big gap between the 2 pieces. They are better left separated.
Paint
As said above the harness, gauntlets, and belt are all silver. The furry underwear has a little bit of a different paint wash than the original figure. I think it actually looks better this time around.
I’m still impressed by the paint on the MOTUC line. I’m surprised there are no slip ups on the paint.
Articulation
He has the standard MOTUC articulation: Ball joints at the head, neck, shoulders, and hips. He has swivel joints at the biceps, waist, wrists, hips, and the top of the boots. He has hinges at the elbows, knees, and ankles. He also has a sweet ab crunch.
It should be noted that the articulation is a little bit restricted in the shoulder region if he has his cape on. This is something that is to be expected though.
The articulation is great on these figures. I think that the MOTUC line has just enough to satisfy one.
Overall
This figure does have a nice amount of accessories, though the cape with the fuzzy flocking is terrible. The paint apps on this figure are better than the original figure though. If you can get over the fuzzy flocking on the cape then you might like this figure. I would have gladly traded the 2 half swords for a display stand for the power orb though. Maybe I will get a stand with another figure.
