Gentle Giant have recently revealed that they’ll be expanding their Jumbo Retro line again with figures based on the Mattel Marvel Secret Wars figures that were released in the 80’s. They aim to accomplish this by 3D scanning the figures and up scaling them to 12-inches, just as they have already done with the Kenner Star Wars figures and the original G.I. Joes. So far they have only officially revealed Black Suit Spider-Man and Hobgoblin.
If you look at the image with 2 silhouettes, you can probably already guess that the next two figures will be Wolverine and Kang, though at this point in time we don’t know when they will be released.
I’m a bit too young to remember these but I can clearly see their appeal. Much like the original figures, they have the same sculpts and paint, along withe the same five points of articulation the original figures featured.
The only figure that will come with an accessory is the Hobgoblin, which is a purple glider that attaches to his feet. They’ll come in resalable cards inspired by the original line; very similar to the packaging their other jumbo figures come in. They aren’t scheduled for release until Q3 2015, but Spider-Man is currently available for pre-order here priced at $90.
Personally I’m not a big fan of these, as they don’t appeal to me whatsoever. But if you’re a fan of the original figures and a retro collector, these are a must have (if you have the cash).
