A Call to Action (Figures): The Winner of SDCC 2015 Is…
The winner of San Diego Comic Con 2015 is…us, the collectors of action figures.
One look through the photo galleries (but don’t limit yourself to one, Nick and your friendly neighborhood jman did a great job putting them together) and you’ll realize that all of the companies that were there brought their A games. Or at least put together promotional packages, prototypes, and photographs good enough to get me very excited for the upcoming year. Unless I get a chance to hold these figures and play with them, I wouldn’t really be able to recommend or rank them.
We’ve also got to take into account that much of action figures collecting is subjective. There are figures that are superior to others. Think of high-end figures like Hot Toys going up against my favorite figures Avengers Infinite. Anyone would be crazy to say that the Avengers Infinite are better on any of the axis we use to judge action figures (packaging, articulation, paint, sculpt, and accessories). What’s subjective is the emotional connection the collector feels to different characters. What makes Avengers Infinite great is that I have a Longshot, a Rogue, half of the Wrecking Crew, and so many other minor characters that will more than likely never get a Hot Toys version. That subjectivity is why I can’t choose a winner, and why you, dear reader, should check out the galleries and let me know what you think is the best figure in the comments.
What makes San Diego Comic Con so great is that it’s the destination for so many companies and brands to unveil new toys there ends up being something for anyone and everyone to get excited about. For me it’s Morbius the Living Vampire. That’s probably very different from what you’re going to want most leaving that gallery, but I bet you’re going to be as excited as I am anyways.
San Diego Comic Con is a destination for companies to prepare for the upcoming year. It’s a deadline that they can’t push back, and because thy know the amount of foot traffic will go through their booths and then the booths of their competitors, it forces them to produce at a high quality. And that’s how we, the collectors, win San Diego Comic Con every year.
