Since we first saw Prometheus Series 1 hit shelves back at the end of September 2012, fans of the movie were crying for more. The two Engineer figures were pretty amazing and we could only expect that level of greatness in the upcoming series’. Now that Prometheus Series 2 has finally started to hit retail we can find out how NECA did. I was able to score a NECA Prometheus Series 2 David 8 Figure for review (along with Deacon) – so let’s take a look and see how well NECA pulled off the first human figure in the series.
David 8 comes in the standard NECA clamshell packaging like the previous Series 1 figures. The front of the packaging is actually the exact same as series 1. It may have a slightly different appearance to the packaging of the Engineer figures because David 8 actually comes with accessories which are all shown off in the window.
The back of the packaging features some differences to the series 1 packaging. David 8’s packaging features the Prometheus Logo at the top along with his name and a short bio about him. The difference on his packaging is along the bottom – it features the figures from series 1, 2, and the upcoming series 3. I like this way better than the Series 1 packaging, but it’s understandable why this wasn’t included with series 1.
David 8 stands about 7 inches tall and has phenomenal sculpting detail all around his costume. There are multiple textures, creases on the cloth parts of the uniform, and a bunch of little pads that I suppose a space uniform would have.
David 8 comes with a flashlight, 2 heads, and a helmet. The flashlight is painted pretty plain, but it fits really snug into his right hand. I am also happy that they gave you a choice between 2 different head sculpts. It gives you multiple display options, especially with the helmet. The helmet is a pretty cool accessory too, it just pushes on into place. It stays there surprisingly well too (you can pick him up by the helmet and shake him).
He has a camera that is attached to his shoulder but you can remove it if you would like. The cord is still going to be attached to his butt, but you can have him hold the camera in his hand if you would like to (see picture). The camera is articulated too!
The paint on the figure is pretty good. There are a few logos printed on the figure’s costume that are pretty clear. I can’t read them very good though since they are so small. There are a few paint slips here and there, but that is kind of expected.
The blue part of his costume actually has a dirty wash on it so the costume isn’t just a solid bright blue like the official product photo showed. If you are buying this figure in the store, paint is something that you are going to want to watch out for.
Recently NECA has been making amazingly articulated action figures and this is no exception. This figure is super articulated. It’s just perfect. David 8 has:
- Ball joint neck
- Swivel/hinge shoulder
- Swivel/hinge elbow
- Swivel forearm
- Ball joint wrist
- Ball torso
- Swivel waist
- T hips (with outer movement)
- Swivel thigh
- Double joint knees
- Pivot ankles
I was a bit iffy about those hips when I first saw pictures of the prototypes, but they fit him perfectly. You can get just about any pose out of him. Every other joint will work as expected also. The pivot ankles are one of the biggest highlights of the figure. He can even do a cartwheel! – Wait – a cartwheeling dude in an astronaut suit? Now that’s articulation!
For being the first human figure in the Prometheus line, NECA definitely pulled David 8 off. The articulation, sculpt, and paint are all phenomenal. If you are a fan of the Prometheus movie you are going to want to get this action figure, heck even if you aren’t you may want to consider picking him up.
