I was finally able to score the latest member of the TMNT team! I have been searching for this guy for weeks now and I finally stumbled on him in Target over the weekend. I was also able to pick up Dogpound and Fishface, so stay tuned for reviews on those guys as well. Join me as we take a look into the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Metalhead Figure Review.
In case you have missed the other figures in this series of figures made by Playmates Toys you can check out the reviews of Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo, Shredder, Kraang, Foot Soldier, April O’Neil, and Splinter here.
Packaging
The packaging on this figure is similar to what we have seen on the rest of the figures in this series though there are some slight changes. The front on the blister card packaging still features the bright green and purple colors and the TMNT logo along the top. The 4 turtle brothers are coming down the right side of the blister. The figure and his accessory are featured nicely in the blister. This is nice, allowing you to inspect the paint job on the figure.
On the back of the card is where you will see the changes (and the mistakes). You get the cut out character bio for Metalhead and some brief information about the show. Below this all of the other basic action figures that Playmates Toys has released so far are featured. If you look at Michelangelo he has a picture of Raphael! I wonder if they are going to fix this for future runs? I do like how they changed how the figures are arranged on the back, Foot Clan and Turtle gang.
Sculpt
The sculpt for this figure is spot on to the cartoon. He really looks cool. Once I saw him pop up on the internet I knew I just had to have this guy. He has some nice little sculpted details that give him the image that he has metal plates covering his body. There are metal knobs sticking out like joints in the metal. They all look very nice. On the back of his shell he has a NYC manhole cover that have a very defined sculpt.
The lazer accessory is made of semi translucent plastic and fits loosely into the hole drilled into his right forearm.
Overall I really like the sculpt. The problems really come in on the other categories.
Paint
Paint on all of these TMNT figures can be kind of a hit and a miss. You can inspect your figures in the store and think that you got a good one, then you get home and you have a sloppy paint job. Don’t you hate it when that happens?
This guy is kind of odd. The yellow on him isn’t all painted on. His knees and groin area were molded yellow and his chest, head, and elbows were painted yellow. The knees and the chest don’t really match the same color of yellow. That is a little bit distracting. I don’t know if you can see the difference so well in the pictures.
The logos on his arms are both done very sharp. The rest of the paint seems fine. The yellow paint has some occasional slop here and there, but what can you do.
Articulation
Articulation for this figure is lacking much like we have seen with the rest of the Foot Clan figures by Playmates. What a shame really since the 4 brothers were so well done. For articulation this guy has:
- Ball joint head
- Swivel shoulders
- Swivel wrists (top of gauntlets)
- Swivel/hinge hips
- Swivel/hinge knees
While the upper torso articulation is lacking really bad (arms can just move forward and backwards) the lower body has some amazing movement. I think that the lower body articulation may even be better than the turtle brothers. The hips are not blocked by the front of the shell and the knees seem to be better as well.
If he just had elbows or maybe even hinges on his shoulders I think that the articulation could have been saved on this figure. I was really expecting for articulation like we saw on the 4 brothers because of a similar sculpt.
Fun Factor
This guy is pretty fun with his missile (would be better if it actually fired) and if you have the rest of the basic figures then you should be set. Even better, if you have managed to get the amazing Playmates Playset then this guy will just add to the fun.
Overall
Overall I love the sculpting on this figure but I feel that Playmates has dropped the ball on the articulation. Really they have dropped the ball on all of the figures after the 4 brothers. If you are looking to complete you set you are going to be left with no choice but to pick this guy up though.
Ordering
If you are looking to pick this guy up then you can buy them at most big retail stores. Walmart used to have them for $7.77 but now that the holiday season has hit I have noticed a recent price increase to $8.88. Most other stores have them for $8.99.
He really now has just started to hit retail stores now in some areas.
If you want to buy him online you can get him at:
Atomic Toy Store (my toy store) $11.45
Amazon- $11.99
Or you can probably get a good deal on eBay. Check out the listings below, they are sorted lowest prices first.
