Diamond Select Expendables 2 Barney Ross Figure Review
This figure may be lacking in the articulation area but I feel that he really makes up for it in the paint and sculpt. And he has a bunch of sweet accessories. If you are an Expendables fan then you should really consider picking up this figure.

Last summer we had quite a few big movies such as the Dark Knight, The Avengers, and the Expendables 2. You may not have liked the Expendables 2, but I did. I mean how can you not like a movie with Chuck Norris in it? You have to be scared to not like the movie because of what Chuck Norris is going to do to you if you don’t like it. Well with most movies now a days there comes the action figures. I have been waiting for these guys for quite some time – since a first heard about them actually. Let’s find out if the Diamond Select Expendables 2 Barney Ross Figure stands up to what I expected him to in a full blown review.
I should also note that there are 2 versions of Barney Ross – one with a beret and one without. Apparently the beret version is an exclusive version that is just available to comic shops and other specialty retailers. More on that later though.

The packaging that Mr. Barney Ross comes in is quite a bit different that we are used to with Diamond Select Toys. Normally you would get a huge oversized book-end style Marvel Select package that you wouldn’t know what to do with. For this figure, you are actually getting something more normal/traditional – a blister card!
The front of the blister shows the figure off nicely, though you can’t see his other 2 pistols. They are hiding behind the “Expendables 2” text. At first, I thought I was ripped off and they forgot to put my other 2 weapons inside. Then I found them. =) You can’t see in the pictures, but the card also has some pretty cool art behind the figure with a large Expendables skull. If you like to keep the cards, you might like this one.
One thing that was odd to me was if this was supposed to be an exclusive figure… Why is there not an exclusive sticker/marking on the packaging?
The back of the card has a bunch of explosions of colors, the Expendables skull again, and a bunch of bullet holes. It looks really cool. There is a brief bio for the movie and all of the figures that are available now in the line. You can also take a look at the much more goofy looking Barney with no beret.
The sculpt looks like Sylvester Stallone without a doubt. It may be a little bit cartoonish but you can still see him in the sculpt. Apart from the head, the figure actually has some pretty good details sculpted around his body.
He has “BLACKHAWK” sculpted on his chest like he did in the movie, he has his knife pendant necklace that he was wearing in the movie, and he even has a watch that is sculpted separately from his arm.
His arms have some nice detail in them also. DST could have went low-budget and done normal arms but he has something special about his arms and skin tone. His arms have veins sculpted into them and he also has a very realistic skin tone.
Barney comes with 3 identical pistols as accessories. The can all attach to his removable holster belt – 2 on the hips and 1 on the small of his back. The 2 on his hip stay secure well, but the one on his back doesn’t stay attached very well at all.
Barney can’t really hold onto his pistols very well either. His right hand is way too loose and his trigger finger isn’t sculpted to reach the trigger. His right hand is a little bit tighter, though his trigger finger still isn’t sculpted the way it should be.
Most of the paint is obviously blacks and grays since he is wearing tactical gear. He has some dry brushing on his lower legs making his pants look dirty almost like he has been walking in mud.
Like I said above his skin tone looks more realistic than just molding the plastic in flesh tone and calling it a day. DST did something more to the skin to make it pass better as realistic skin and it looks great.
Surprisingly there is no paint slips anywhere on the figure. Everything is spot on and is very tight.
Articulation is very sad on this figure. I was expecting more, way more. But he has:
- Ball joint neck
- Ball joint shoulders
- Bicep swivel
- Single joint elbows
- Swivel wrists
- Swivel waist
- Thigh swivel
- Single joint knees
His ball jointed neck allows for smooth movement in all directions. His upper body is a little bit restricted due to the ball jointed shoulders. The ball joints are sitting inside the torso so you don’t get nearly as much range of motion that you would get with a disk ball jointed shoulder.
The T-joint hips don’t work very well either. You can only get a couple poses out of the legs and that’s about it. His thighs can only move forward because the sculpt completely restricts the backward movement.
To make this figure have better articulation I think he needs completely new hips and shoulders. As of now, he’s a complete mess articulation wise.
This figure is quite fun even considering the few down points that it does have. He has a pretty good sculpt that is quite movie accurate even though it may be a little bit cartoonish. One of my favorite parts about this figure is that he comes with a bunch of accessories and then he actually is about to holster all of them! Most figures can’t do that but good old Barney Ross can!
He may be lacking in the articulation area but I feel that he really makes up for it in the paint and sculpt. If you are an Expendables fan then you should really consider picking up this figure and even the other 2 figures in this line.
